Each year Syracuse University Institute for Security Policy and Law hires highly motivated Syracuse University graduate students to serve as research assistants, directly supporting SPL activities by researching new and developing national security and terrorism policy.

Matthew Mittelsteadt

Matt Mittelsteadt is a Research Fellow researching artificial intelligence (AI) policy and the impacts of AI on national security law and intelligence, spearheading an innovative policy solution that could be used to enforce compliance for a potential arms control ban on autonomous weapons systems. Mittelsteadt is pursuing a master’s degree in cybersecurity at the College of Engineering and Computer Science and holds an MPA from the Maxwell School.

Ryan Gross

Ryan, a Maxwell School student, is a former infantry battalion intelligence officer (Baghdad) and Intelligence Analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). He was named a 2017 Tillman Scholar, one of a cohort of 61 US service members, veterans, and military spouses across the nation.

Lishayne King

Lishayne is an SU College of Law 3L student and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Science and Technology Law.

Daniel Ostrin

Daniel is a JD/MPA Candidate (2018), a former Intern for New America Foundation, where assisted publication of the Foreign Policy Magazine South Asia Channel; monitored foreign fighters, drone strikes, prison radicalization, and homegrown extremism databases; and created detail-packets of current prosecution cases against alleged terrorist within the United States.

Katharine Russell

Ph.D. student Katharine Russell attended Binghamton University where she majored in Political Science and Arabic Studies. After spending a summer volunteering in Morocco, she developed an interest in women’s issues in the Middle East.

Chris Tonsmeire

Maxwell School graduate student Chris Tonsmeire is an Army veteran, a graduate of Florida State University, and a scuba diver. 

 

Oleksiy Anokhin

Oleksiy, a Ukrainian citizen, is a candidate in both SU Maxwell School’s EMPA and EMIR program, working on conflict studies and postconflict reconstruction. During the past five years, he has served as a senior public servant in Ukraine within several state bodies, including the Presidential Office, Parliament, Cabinet of Ministers, and Ministry of Justice. He earned a LL.M. from Taurida National University in Crimea.

Andrew Dieselman

Andrew is a joint JD/MPA candidate (2017) at SU Law and SU Maxwell School. He is also the Brady K. Howell Fellow for National Security Studies at the Maxwell School, where he assists Col. Bill Smullen (Ret.) to prepare executive level education programs attended by senior public and private sector leaders. From 2010 to 2014, Andrew was a US Army ROTC cadet.

Brittani Howell

A graduate of SUNY-Polytechnic Institute, SU Law student Brittani Howell is a Regional Desk Reporter for the Impunity Watch project at SU Law and an Assistant Editor for the Journal on Terrorism and Security Analysis.

Colin Tansits

Colin is a joint MPA/JD (2017) student at SU Law and SU Maxwell School. At SU Law, Colin has participated in the Syracuse Law Review and Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and is a Student Attorney at the Community Development Law Clinic, where he provides representation for not-for-profit organizations involved in improving low-income communities. He holds a BA in journalism from Temple University.

Jane Yoona Chung

Jane is pursuing a dual masters in Public Administration and International Relations at the SU Maxwell School. She has been a Program and Research Intern at the US-Korea Institute at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a Graduate Assistant in the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs’ East Asia Program.

Steven Marc Fantigrossi

Steven is pursuing an MPA at the SU Maxwell School. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in political science from SU. Among his past experiences, he was an Investigative Intern at the New York State Division of Human Rights.

Tulia Gattone

A native of Rome, Italy, Tulia is a masters student in International Relations at SU Maxwell School and a CAS in Security Studies candidate at ISPL. She graduated with the highest honors in International Economics, Management, and Finance from Bocconi University, where she was the co-founder and Vice-President of the Bocconi Students Energy Society.

Zachary D. Johnson

Zachary is a third-year student at the SU College of Law. Most recently, he worked at the US Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Administrative Law Branch, where he researched and drafted legal memoranda on administrative law issues dealing with DHS regulations, the Federal Tort Claims Act, debt collection under the Federal Claims Collection Standards, federal tax law on fringe benefits, and the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

Ryan Lester

Ryan is enrolled in a joint Master’s Degree program, pursuing a Master’s of Arts from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a Master’s of Public Administration from the SU Maxwell School. He has been a Foreign Language Program Manager at the US Department of Defense and an intern at the UN Development Programme’s Washington Representation Office.

Jeffrey Treistman

Jeffrey is a Political Science Ph.D. candidate at the SU Maxwell School with interests in international relations, defense policy, and the “great powers.” He received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Colorado and his master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University. Before grad school, he spent six months working for the US Department of State at the Iraq Desk. He then spent 26 months in Baghdad as the state department’s Policy Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq. For these efforts he received the Franklin Award for Public Diplomacy. He also has served as a consultant to US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

Chris Beeler

Chris is a second-year Juris Doctor candidate and is pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Study in Security Studies from ISPL. He is currently a Research Assistant for ISPL Research Assistant Professor Corri Zoli, with a focus on the development of the rule of law in postconflict nations. He is also an editor for the Syracuse Law Review and a member of the National Appellate Advocacy Team.

Jennifer Camillo

Jennifer is a JD candidate in the SU College of Law and former school teacher and intern in the US Attorney’s Office.

Christopher Elliot

Chris is a JD/MPA candidate in the SU College of Law and Maxwell School and a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force.

Uzma Gulamali

Uzma is a JD candidate in the SU College of Law, a former Judicial Clerk in Town of Greenburgh Court, and former Student Attorney in the SU Criminal Defense Law Clinic.

Elizabeth Rankin Irwin

Elizabeth Irwin is a second-year student at SU’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, where she is pursuing master’s degrees in Public Administration and International Relations. She also is a candidate for certificates of advanced study in Security Studies and Postconflict Resolution from ISPL, as well as a CAS in Information Security Management from SU’s School of Information Studies. In addition to being an ISPL Research Assistant, Elizabeth works as a Research Analyst in the Office of the US Secretary of Defense and as an intern for the Maxwell School’s National Security Studies executive education program.

Brian Kraemer

Brian is a JD candidate in the SU College of Law, a research assistant for Professor William Banks, and has interned in the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office and the State of Texas Senate.

Dan Krupinsky

Dan is a second-year Juris Doctor candidate in the SU College of Law and an MPA candidate in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. During the Summer of 2013, he completed the Counterterrorism Studies Executive Certificate Program at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. He is a reporter on the Africa desk for Impunity Watch and an associate member of Moot Court Honor Society. He received his B.A. in Journalism from Penn State University.

Sean Nichols

Sean is an MAIR candidate in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and a former technology and defense and commercial and industrial underwriter. He is also a recipient of an ISPL Carol Becker and Gerald B. Cramer Graduate Study Abroad Fellowship.

Lawrence Allen Raab

Lawrence is a third-year J.D. candidate in the SU College of Law and an MPA candidate in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He is President of the Student Association on Terrorism and Security Analysis
, where he helps to publish the Journal on Terrorism and Security Analysis
. He is also Director of Policy and Outreach for the Veterans’ Issues Support Initiative and Outreach Network.

Christopher Boyce Thompson

Chris is a Master of Arts in International Relations candidate in the  Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, focusing on Peace, Security, and Conflict and Africa. He is also pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Study in Conflict Resolution from the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration at the Maxwell School.

Neil Wakeman

Neil is an MPA candidate in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

 

Carolyn Abdenour

Carolyn is a third-year Juris Doctor candidate pursuing a Certificate in National Security and Counterterrorism Law at ISPL. She earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Economics with minors in History and Psychology from the University of California, Irvine in 2007. From 2007-2009, Carolyn served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana. Prior to entering law school, she interned in Washington D.C. for Congressman Fortney H. (Pete) Stark and Capitol Associates, Inc., a bi-partisan lobby firm. In 2011, Carolyn received an Executive Certificate in Counterterrorism Studies from the ICT in Herzliya, Israel. In addition to working as a research assistant for ISPL, Carolyn is a reporter for Impunity Watch and an associate member of the Moot Court Honors Society.

Andrew Bissett

Andrew is an MPA candidate in The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He has worked as an intern in SU’s National Security Studies Program, as an interior firefighter/EMT at the Vischer Ferry Fire Company, as a field supervisor at Syracuse University Ambulance, and a resident advisor at Syracuse University. He holds a BA in economics from SU.

Elizabeth Irwin

Elizabeth Irwin is a dual-degree candidate at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, where she is pursuing a MPA and MAIR. Her scholastic interests include global and national security, foreign policy, and language study in Mandarin Chinese. She is a graduate assistant in ISPL and a member of the National Science Foundation’s CyberCorps Scholarship for Service. Prior to graduate study, Elizabeth worked for SAC Capital Advisors, LP, a multinational hedge fund. Originally from Mentor, OH, she earned a B.Sc. in Theatre and History from Northwestern University.

Emily Schneider

Emily is a third-year Juris Doctor candidate pursuing a certificate in National Security and Counterterrorism Law from ISPL. She earned a MA degree in English from the University of Rochester specializing in Medieval literature and transcripts written prior to 1066 AD. While at the University of Rochester, she participated in the Theatre in London program as a Graduate Assistant. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2009 with a BA in English where she was awarded the Campbell Internship scholarship. Emily was a member of the Cold Case Justice Initiative at Syracuse College of Law during the 2010-2011 academic year. She was also an extern at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York for the 2011-2012 academic year. Emily hopes to pursue a career in national security upon completion of her law school studies.

Ryan Higgins

Ryan is a third year Juris Doctor candidate who is pursuing a Certificate in National Security and Counterterrorism Law from ISPL. He completed his undergraduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth
University, double majoring in Political and Homeland Security and Emergency Management. He completed his Masters of Public Administration at the University of Southern California. While at the
University of Southern California, he worked as a full-time homeland security consultant taking part in the largest earthquake exercise in California state history. While at Syracuse College of Law he
participated in the ICT Executive Certificate Program in Herzliya, Israel. Upon completion of his law school studies, Ryan wishes to pursue a career in national security and economic policy through the
engagement of politics and legislation.

Alex Veneziano

Alex Veneziano is a third-year law student at Syracuse University’s College of Law and a Masters of Public Administration candidate at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Alex earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan in 2009. In addition to working as a senior graduate assistant for the Maxwell School’s National Security Studies program and as a research assistant for ISPL, Alex has interned for a U.S. Senator and the Heritage Foundation. He also served as an extern law clerk to Judge Frederick J. Scullin, Jr. in the Northern District of New York.

Sahar Azar

Sahar Azar is a third-year Juris Doctor candidate interested in areas of international and criminal law. In addition to serving on the Executive Board of the Moot Court Honor Society, she is a Senior Editor of the Journal of International Law and Commerce. She received a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Boston University and worked as a paralegal with the Financial Restructuring group of Akin Gump LLP in New York City prior to attending law school.

Brandon Kaufman

Brandon is a third-year law student at the College of Law.  In addition to his work with ISPL, he currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Syracuse Journal of International Law and Commerce.  He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Florida, majoring in Finance and minoring in Entrepreneurship.  Upon completion of his law school studies, Brandon wishes to pursue a career in national security, specifically federal law enforcement and/or counterterrorism policy.

Chadd Montgomery

Chadd Montgomery is a third-year law student at Syracuse University College of Law who is also pursuing a MA in Modern American history from the Maxwell School. He is pursuing a Certificate in National Security and Counterterrorism Law from ISPL. He is a member of Syracuse Law Review and the Federalist Society. He spent the past summer working for the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the Burton Blatt Institute in Syracuse. Chadd signed and returned an affirmative letter of intent, and is slotted to attend the 187th JAOBC and be commissioned into the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the United States Army. His research interests include U.S. Army Force Transformation and national security policy.

Sookyung Oh

Sookyung is a Master of Public Administration candidate at The Maxwell School, Syracuse University. She also serves on the executive board for the MPA class and is active with Policy Students for Fiscal Sustainability and COMPAS. Prior to graduate school, Sookyung worked for seven years in the non-profit and public sectors in a range of issues, including to advance comprehensive immigration reform policies, develop public health education programs & medical services for limited English-proficient immigrants, fundraising, and strategic communications. She holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. At ISPL, she assists the “Resiliency and Security” project team. Upon graduation, Sookyung wishes to pursue a career in the local/state public sector in economic development and/or immigrant integration.

Patrick Vanderpool

Patrick Vanderpool is a third-year law student at Syracuse University College of Law, where he is pursuing a certificate in National Security and Counterterrorism law. Patrick received a BA from St. John Fisher College, majoring in Political Science. After completing his undergraduate degree, Patrick worked as a legal recruiter for an executive search firm in Rochester, NY  While at the College of Law, he has interned with the US Attorney’s Office and is a member of Impunity Watch, a journal focusing on international human rights, and the Journal on Terrorism and Security Analysis. His research interests focus on domestic security and counterterrorism efforts.

Joon Kee Bahng

Joon Kee Bahng is a third year law student at Syracuse University College of Law. Joon, originally from South Korea, graduated with a BA in English Literature from Korea University. Prior to law school, Joon was a project manager at Nielsen Company, an international marketing research company, and served his military duty as a KATUSA in the Eighth United States Army, Camp Jackson, Korea. At the College of Law, he is an Executive Editor to the Syracuse Law Review. Joon is interested in pursuing a career in international law and policy.

D. Zachary Champ

Zac is a third-year joint Juris Doctor/Masters of Public Administration candidate interested in communications law and policy. At the College of Law he serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Syracuse Science & Technology Law Reporter and President of the Communications Law & Policy Society. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Connecticut, receiving a major in Political Science and a minor in International Studies. Zac has lengthy work experience in both e-commerce and marketing.

Sambhu Singh Rathi

Sambhu is pursuing his Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs with a focus on international development and administration. Prior to graduate school, he served as Program Officer for the New Delhi based non-governmental organization, Sustainable Environmental and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS) where he worked on various international projects. His research interests include international development and administration, disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, climate change, South Asia, and NGOs in developing and transitional nations.

Michael Sampson

Michael Sampson is a third year joint Juris Doctor/Master’s in International Relations student at Syracuse University. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of California, San Diego and worked in clinical drug development before attending graduate school. At the College of law, Michael is an Executive Editor on the Syracuse Law Review, the Managing Editor of the Impunity Watch Law Journal, and serves as a student attorney in the Legal Education Clinic representing clients in securities arbitration matters. Michael is interested in a career in national security and international law.
